Spiritual Multiplier: Occurring only once every few years, this full moon is believed to grant 1000x more merit for prayer, fasting, and charity.

Lord Purushottam's Blessings: The entire extra month is directly governed by Lord Vishnu. Worship on Purnima is said to wash away past karma and liberate the soul.

Mindfulness and Illumination: Purnima symbolizes completion. Devotees meditate or sit in the moonlight to balance the mind and reduce anxiety.

Goddess Lakshmi Connection: Auspiciously tied to wealth and prosperity, it is a prime day to invite abundance into your home.

Story

The story of Adhika Jyeshtha Purnima (the sacred full moon of the extra lunar month) centers on how a rejected, "inauspicious" month was transformed by Lord Vishnu into the holiest time of the year.

The Legend of the "Orphan" Month
In the Hindu lunar calendar, the year normally has 12 months, each assigned to a specific deity. However, because lunar and solar calendars do not perfectly align, ancient sages calculated an extra (intercalary) month every three years, called Adhika Masa (or Adhik Jyeshtha when it falls during the summer).

Because no specific god was assigned to oversee this 13th month, humans stopped performing auspicious ceremonies like marriages or housewarmings during this time. They treated it as an impure or "Mal Maas".

Lord Vishnu's Blessing

Distressed and crying, the extra month approached the sages, but they could not help. Finally, the month went to the supreme creator, Lord Vishnu.

Moved by its sorrow, Lord Vishnu took the month under his personal protection and gave it his own sacred name, Purushottam. He declared

1. This month would no longer be seen as inauspicious.

2. Instead, it would be celebrated as the holiest time of all, making it 1,000 times more powerful than regular months for spiritual growth.

3. Anyone who performs charity, fasting, and worship during this time—especially on the full moon (Purnima)—will cleanse their past sins and attain immense spiritual merit.

Core Rituals & Traditions
  • Holy Bathing (Ganga Snan): Devotees wake up at sunrise to take a minimum of 10 distinct ritual dips in the Ganges. Major congregational hubs include Har ki Pauri in Haridwar, Dashashwamedh Ghat in Varanasi, Rishikesh, and the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj.

  • Rule of Ten: Ritual offerings to the goddess must consist of 10 items (e.g., 10 types of flowers, 10 fruits, or 10 oil lamps). Donations are given in sets of ten to Brahmins and the underprivileged.

  • Maha Aarti & Deep Daan: Majestic evening Aarti celebrations are conducted at major river banks. Devotees light and float clay lamps (diyas) downstream as a collective offering.

  • Yamuna Worship: Simultaneously, the sister river Yamuna is actively worshipped across regions like Mathura and Vrindavan with kite-flying events, alongside the distribution of refreshing summer drinks like sharbat and lassi.
