Ganga Dussehra (also known as Gangavataran) is a major Hindu festival celebrating the divine descent of the holy river Ganges from heaven to Earth. Devotees observe this holy day on the Dashami (10th day) of the Shukla Paksha (waxing moon) in the Hindu calendar month of Jyeshtha.

• The Descent of Ganga: According to Hindu scriptures, King Bhagiratha performed rigorous penance to bring the celestial river Ganga down to Earth to purify and liberate the souls of his ancestors.

• The Grace of Shiva: To prevent Earth from shattering under Ganga's immense celestial impact, Lord Shiva captured the cascading river in his matted locks, releasing her stream gently onto the terrestrial plane.

• Absolution of 10 Sins (Dasha-Hara): The word "Dussehra" means the destroyer of ten sins. Taking a holy dip in the Ganges on this specific day cleanses an individual of 10 distinct types of sins—3 physical, 4 verbal, and 3 mental.
